Sing a Song of People is a heartwarming poem written by Lois Lenski and illustrator Giles Laroche. The book has various relatable illustrations that we see in our day to day life. They depict city life, the crowd, people walking in a hurry, and people going to the subway. The poem describes the hastiness of city life. The city life is rapid, and no one has time to rest. Every person is hurried to reach their destination. Every individual is on the run either up or down, some on the subway, on buses, metros, sidewalks.

The poet describes that people are passing, and wherever we look, back or front, you will find people. If you take a spin, then you will not notice a single person resting. But no person is talking or greeting each other. All you find everywhere is people moving and passing by you. This resembles the real-world scenario where everyone is so caught with work that no one has time to talk or have a moment for another person. We never value the time when we have everyone around us, but after time has flown away, we regret it. 

People are riding taxis, going on subways, trying to catch their buses. Every person is in a hurry to reach their destinations. They are well dressed in all formal clothing, hats on their head, and arriving to do their jobs. People are prepared for any inconvenience in their way; their ultimate goal is to reach their vocational place and work. Some people are carrying umbrellas if it rains. They are dedicated to performing their jobs irrespective of climate change. All everyone cares about is working and moving. The rain has been used ironically to show that the movement of people is unstoppable. Nothing stops people from moving and working.

The poem says there are people in tall buildings, moving up and down through the elevator. There are people in small stores as well. Every person is going and reaching to their jobs. Some work in small stores and some work in tall buildings. Some people are walking alone, and some people are walking in a crowd. Some are laughing, some are talking, and some are grumpy. Sing a song of people describes various types of people you will notice while walking in the city. But despite their workplace or state, they all are in an equal hurry. Despite being separated by their work, all are united together as a crowd.

Conclusion

The poem is stressed on the fact that city life is expeditious but try to be aware and enjoy this life. We pass hundreds of people each day and do not know any of them. We are in such a hurry that we do not even notice others. The poet insisted on seeing the pleasures of city life and try to feel how connected we are to each other.

They lure their victims who are especially women, and young children using varying deceptive techniques. Deception via charm and lies and promising them better opportunities in life to make more money, etc. When this form of abuse of power and exploitation is done to children and kids, it is called child trafficking. 

 

These young children who place their trust in dangerous strangers are trafficked and find themselves helpless in the most difficult situations where they cannot even get out of. The rate of this serious crime and violation of human rights, where every year the number of victims falling prey and being trafficked in their home country and abroad is only alarmingly rising. 

 

Trafficking happens because of poverty, lack of social opportunities, oppression, and lack of economic opportunities. They want to break the cycle of poverty and be free but these conflicts and instability in life make them the victims of such heinous crimes as they are trafficked to even worse conditions, with unhygienic sanitation and no healthcare.

 

The drive of humans to fulfil their own selfish needs has taken such an ugly turn that even children are not spared. And most of these trafficked children are girls. Nearly ⅔ rd of the trafficked children are girls. They are then forced into many illegal activities like child labour which is otherwise considered a punishable offence. They practice this in remote areas where this offence cannot even be reported as people are unaware of it. Not only that but they are also forced to marry much older men who treat them as sex slaves. Young girls are also forced into prostitution that is a violation of human rights. They are also often used for extracting organs and selling them to make money.

 

At such a tender age, these children suffer unimaginable pain, they become a victim of multiple pregnancies, and many also suffer from sexually transmitted diseases, and they also lose their lives more often as their bodies are unable to bear so much trauma. 

 

The most chilling part of this practice is how strategic and organised the perpetrators who carry out this mission are. Once the victim falls prey they are trapped and overnight transported to another region, state or country where they know no one to ask for help and hence they suffer.

 

Some organisations are fighting against trafficking and taking action to provide a home and take care of victims who somehow managed to get out of it. But this is a long fight and there aren’t enough organisations fighting for it. UNICEF, which is the United Nations Children’s Fund, is a Humanitarian Aid Organisation that works on a global level to provide a rehabilitation centre for such children.

We discuss educational reforms, child labor, children’s rights, and the future of children. However, the only thing we don’t do is act. We often see children begging or selling something at traffic signals, working in stores, and even coming to and working in our houses, but we prefer to remain silent observers.

 

Today’s issue is that we talk and believe that our work is done. This is why, despite our best efforts, we have yet to eradicate anything as serious as child trafficking. Every year, millions of children in our country are forced into prostitution, organ trafficking, slavery, and terrorism. These children are kept in a desolate environment and are subjected to dangerous and hazardous situations.

 

The majority of the time, kids are not properly fed. This is the India we are giving down to our children after 70 years of independence. There is one group of children who are afraid to move around or play because no one knows what will happen to them next, and another group of children that is created by their own parents to do business in order to survive and fight hunger.

 

Some blame poverty, some blame unemployment, others still blame illiteracy, and others blame moral degradation. However, I believe that there is no single reason for this inhumane act and that they are all connected and lead to one another.

 

Now is the moment to stop waiting for others or the government to act and start seeing things for ourselves! We need to awaken our consciousness rather than just talking about it for a while and then forgetting about it. You may not be able to change the entire world on your own, but you may be the turning point by encouraging others to contribute.

 

Thinking about issues, discussing them, and obtaining opinions are all important aspects of raising awareness and better understanding the situations. However, we need to go beyond discussing and take the necessary treatment steps.

In return, they ask for their children to be sent off work so they can lead better lives.

 

The traffickers can be men and women. Both use deceit as their weapon of choice. The children are trafficked into worse conditions and are forced into illegal activities like labour, making them work in factories and industries in unhygienic environments. Girls are forcefully married or traded into prostitution, it is called commercial trafficking. It leads to multiple pregnancies in young girls, and they may lose their lives. Apart from this, the children are used for the extraction of organs. 

 

There are a few organisations that carry out rescue missions to protect the children from labour and sexual exploitation, for example, Avani in Mumbai, Her Choices Trust in Hyderabad, and Faith Foundation in Shillong. These are Non-Government Organizations, and the financial support they acquire is also limited, but they still manage to provide the necessary rehabilitation resources.

Let us go back to the history of the world. Many events happened around the world. Events such as injustice towards people, slavery, racism, and dictatorship. During all these events the universe provided us with a few people who rose to the occasion and helped humanity to fight injustice. They taught us how to fight, they led us towards a better future, and those my friends were leaders. Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Martin king Luther Jr and so on were present to lead and guide people towards a better future. One quality that was common in all of these leaders was that they had this amazing ability to persuade people to respect and follow them.

 

Firstly let’s just not confuse leadership with dictatorship. A good leader will never dominate or subjugate people because of their sex or position in society, that is done by a dictator and the best example of a dictator was Adolf Hitler. Surely he had thousands of followers but he dominated them and made them forcefully adapt his mentality, a good leader will never do that. The world is full of people who have a great desire to take charge and forcefully rule over other people’s lives and call themselves a leader which rests assured, is not a sign of a leader.

So who is a true leader? Well, a true leader is someone who is known for his work ethic, A true leader is someone who earns respect through his rightful actions and mass following without any dictatorship. A true leader inspires others in his or her group to be better persons. A great leader will inspire other people to follow in his/her footsteps to become a guiding light for humanity. A good leader will always lead the people towards the path of growth and progress by carrying the torch of wisdom. As the phrase goes ‘Action speaks louder than words, a true leader will never tell people to follow them but the benchmark he or she has set and his or her actions will allow people to trust in him or her. A good leader will always set the goal and will start working towards the goals to achieve it without compromising morals and ethics and this is a sign of a true leader.

 

Let us take the example of Mahatma Gandhi, you could ask anyone about him and the only general answer the crowd will give is that Mahatma Gandhi was a great leader. A journey of a great leader starts with an incident and this could be applied to Gandhi as well. Mahatma Gandhi had settled down in South Africa with his family practicing law but one night during his train journey he was exposed to the cruelty of people in the society towards those with different skin color. He saw that he was a judge because he was an Indian and was considered to be inferior because of his skin. This incident is considered to be the turning point in Mahatma Gandhi’s life. After the incident, he decided to change the perspective of people and also to free India from British rule, and as they say, the rest is history.

Leaders like Mahatma Gandhi possess a great quality of effectively channelizing their energy and also devote themselves to a cause or the growth and progress of humanity. Nelson Mandela, Martin King Luther Junior, and many more have this ability and are considered to be a pattern found in great leaders. The restrictions or the obligations they faced only enabled them to rise against all odds and never bow down to any circumstances.

Leadership is not an easy task and I can assure you that it cannot be cultivated within a day. It is not for people with weak hearts who cannot tolerate hatred, betrayal, and jealousy. A true leader will always have a goal and vision and he or she with his or her team will work every day to accomplish that dream. We often see that in a few working places many bosses call themselves leaders but are never present to help or appreciate the work the employee has done. This is not a sign of a leader. A true leader will always work with the team and listen to the concerns of everyone and also note down the ideas that would be helpful to complete the given task. A true leader never boosts himself or herself for the work and will always try to understand the team.

 

My dear friends, I want to conclude this speech by saying that it is not easy to become a great leader in a day, week, or year. It is a process of facing your fears, discomfort, and failure. The one quality of truth that is common in many leaders in the past is that they could influence and guide people for the betterment of society. For example, When Barack Obama was elected as the 44th president of the United States of America, the country was in a recession phase where the citizens were suffering as many of them did not have proper medical facilities, food to eat, etc but Barack Obama was able to guide everyone. He was able to understand everyone and the difficulties the common people were facing and finally in 2014 he was able to make America recession-free.

The qualities of great leaders cannot be cultivated in a day, month or year as it requires years of patience and to have the ability to understand the situation and lead from the front. Great leaders are always committed to their goals and they have great respect for every person in a team.

To conclude this speech I want to say that it is not easy to become a  good leader within a day or years as it requires years of hard work. In the schools and colleges, we can also convey Respect by addressing our teachers as Sir and Ma’am instead of calling them by their first names. Whereas this form of addressing does not hold true for the corporate culture. In offices, it is encouraged to call each other by their first names to develop a healthy working relationship without any biasedness. 

 

So much Respect is shown by physical gestures but much more can be conveyed by body language. One can also be Respectful to their friends and loved ones, by giving them undivided attention when they are speaking, being helpful, not using harsh words, opening the door for the one behind you, being kind is also a sign of Respect. Apologizing for one’s mistakes, saying sorry, please, and thank you is also a sign of Respecting the other person as well as yourself. 

 

The other form of Respectful behavior also holds true as to how we behave with ourselves and that is called self-Respect. Self-Respect is basically leading your life with grace and dignity without hurting others in the journey. Self-Respect has nothing to do with humiliating others for fulfilling our own agendas. It means showing care towards self and others equally and living a fulfilling life.

 

In conclusion, I would like to say one need not be loud when being Respectful, these subtle gestures are enough to convey your admiration and love for the person. Respecting and honoring someone is truly a great sign of love; it makes the day positive. It also makes you feel better about yourself so choose your way of Respecting others and yourself and do not indulge in negativity.

Respect is a sign language that conveys what you feel for the other person in a simple and positive way. There is a saying that goes, “treat others the way you wish to be treated”, and if you wish to be Respected it is important that you also treat others with equal Respect. 

 

When you admire someone and hold them in high esteem it is natural that you tend to be more Respectful towards them. Being Respectful to others and treating them in an equal manner also means being Respectful to yourself. As anyone who displays Respectful behavior imparts positivity in everyday life and this way of leading life is more peaceful and less complex. 

 

Respect can be displayed in many different ways depending on the relationship you have with the person you admire or the situation you are in. It is important to Respect everyone regardless of whether you disagree with them and have different opinions than them. 

 

Being Respectful doesn’t require a lot of effort, rather one needs to do it with just good intentions and value the presence of another person and acknowledge their view. And the world would be a much better place if we just accepted and Respected our differences.

Respect for others is very important for the individualistic growth of a person, it not only shows that the person is very modest and humble but also presents a very comprehensive and clear picture of his personality. The trait of Respecting is very admired on a professional and personal level. It helps in building healthy and consistent relations with our peers and friends. 

 

Respecting others and being others also affirms the stature of a person as a human in the society. It establishes the presence of intellect, modesty and decency in a person. It is always very loved and admired by others also, a person who Respects others is always Respected by others as well. When we Respect or disRespect others, we are reflecting the parenting and guidance that we have received from others and as such can be the cause of pride or prejudice to the Respect and dignity of our parents. Proper parenting and proper guidance is very important for the development of a great personality. Education also plays a very important role in our ability and understanding of Respect for others. However it is not necessary that only educated people will Respect others or an illiterate person will not Respect others. 

 

Respect is not based on the amount of money one has or on the position of power that one may hold. IrRespective of the social hierarchical position, Respect should be equal to everyone and doesn’t discriminate on the basis of social differences. Often doctors, politicians and rich people are seen to be Respected but the others with low wealth, no power and doing menial jobs equally deserve the same level of Respect. 

 

Humiliation and disRespect to a person on the basis of any distinctions is injustice. Not Respecting others may restrict the person from enjoying his fundamental rights and thus account for a violation of law. Our constitution also directs us to maintain the dignity of every individual and not violate the integrity and dignity of an individual. The constitution makes no discrimination in this regard and thus mandates that we Respect all people. The fundamental duties in our constitution also direct to maintain the Respect of ourselves and others and not to bias on any ground.As a citizen, it thus is our duty to Respect all people and make them feel equally safe and secure in their country. 

 

Most of the traditions and cultures around the world very precisely put forward the regards to Respect others and to seek Respect. The traditions also don’t discriminate on any ground here. The societal stigmas present in society may sometimes not be in line with our constitutional principles or traditional directions. There are certain societal dogmas like caste distinctions, wealth differences, age etc that come out to be derogatory and disRespectful to other people. These dogmas and beliefs, caste distinction  and wealth differences, age need to be put aside and minds should be enlightened that humans are equal. 

 

Age is also not a factor in deciding whether a person should be Respected or not, children also deserve to be Respected and appreciated. It falls upon the shoulders of their parents to make sure that they Respect their children and also make sure that others also don’t disRespect them. Wherever such an event comes up where the parents feel that their children are not Respected well, they must act accordingly and make sure their children don’t feel disRespected and insulted. Children are very vulnerable to negative effects and disRespecting them can have physical and mental effects on them.

 

People can be seen disRespecting other people in front of them or behind their backs, that is not Respect, that is hypocrisy. Respect for others should be deeply embedded in the hearts and minds. Be it for a sweeper or a cobbler, politician or a doctor, all deserve equal Respect as a human and no one deserves to be humiliated and disRespected. Not Respecting others may also have effects on the children of these people because they’ll feel as if they are someone at a lower level, of a lower kind or less human. This is not a proper direction to move in and may lead to severe consequences on these children. 

 

A person who Respects others is very much loved and cared for by all people. A Respectful person also becomes a role model for other people, especially for the students and hence we must strive to become better of ourselves and always be in the form to Respect others. 

Constant is the only change in the only change in this world and our societies are also trying to adapt and change to newer ways of living. The shift from the villages or rural areas to the cities or urban areas is called Urbanisation. This shift is mainly due to better opportunities and therefore progress. And a group of people living closely in this area in a concentrated space and increasing its population is referred to as urbanisation. 

 

This transfer of people usually come from mainly the rural areas and villages nearby. When they shift permanently from one place to another to earn a livelihood there is a shift in population. The urban areas become more populated and the rural areas become less populated. 

 

Even though their intention of the movement is to provide a better life, better home and opportunities for their children and families they often end up with not enough resources even for themselves. So the movement is usually good and more likely to be done when one is employed in an urban area. 

 

Although it is important to know that not everyone wishes to leave their village life and their hometown. Some actually happily prefer to stay back and work and look after their families. And others are nervous about a shift or a change and they do not take this leap or even after they shift they might not be able to get accustomed to the urban lifestyle so they return. And some do not abide by the values in the cities and do not change into the urban way of living or be modern. 

 

However, the urbanisation is only increasing because more and more people are coming to the cities, especially the metropolitan cities for better scope and earning. And anyway there is a shortage of space in the urban areas, this shift creates more problems and people become uncomfortable due to this. It is also quite a task to manage the expenses of cities because everything has astronomical prices. 

 

There are many advantages of urbanisation like more people work in companies, there is an increase in employment. This leads to an increase in GDP and adds to the increasing economy that is favourable to the company. The children of the moving families also receive a better quality education so the literacy rates increase. 

 

The living standards, however, may differ. The ones who are already leading a city life, have comfortable homes and facilities. And the ones who are newly starting life in an urban area must start from the lowest of the lows. And it is extremely hard to climb up the ladder in such bustling and competitive cities. But this doesn’t stop them from starting their lives and taking a chance for the sake of their families and providing them with better everything, food, home, school, education, transportation and a future to look forward to with many career prospects. And urbanisation will not see a decline any time soon.

On a national level, it means, the decline in unemployment, poverty, rise in economy and literacy. Urbanisation

From the time Humans left the nomadic life of hunter gatherers they have established themselves in the most resourceful places. In the past the major resources were water and fertile land and so the establishments were always around the river basin. This provided them with a good harvest and water for them and their livestocks. 

Over the time and ages the importance of other resources grew and so did the places of establishment for the Human. With time the society got created with people segregating work for people who produced and people who supported them by enabling them with the best possible environment. 

After ages Humans got advanced with science and started to use machines. With a machine came industrialisation. Big industries were set up which can produce things with more efficient methods. This provided a job opportunity to people other than producing goods manually. These job opportunities created an economic system and the economy was far stronger than the ones in conventional settlements.

This economy attracted people from all around into the modern cities. This process of people leaving rural areas to live in cities and urban areas is called Urbanisation. By definition the process is predominantly the creation of cities and towns and grows into bigger ones as people move in and start working in central areas.

With the increase in the economy in cities, the basic facilities improved in cities. It attracted more people and it just created a loop where the cities and towns grew up in a cycle. 

Before the 1950s the percentage of population in cities was only 15% which changed to mark a landmark in Human history in 2007 by touching 50% of the total population living in cities. Many studies have predicted that by 2050 64% of the population in developing countries and 86% of the population in developed countries will be living in cities and towns. With increase in infrastructure like better roads, railways, airports, hospitals, schools, communication infrastructure and job opportunities it is more likely that people will keep migrating from the rural areas to the urban areas.

In India there were only 11.4% of people residing in cities and towns in 1901 which changed to 28.53% in 2001. According to the world bank in 2017 the percentage of population living in urban areas increased to 34% with the world bank predicting the percentage will rise to 40.76% in 2030.
